Geriatrics or geriatric medicine is the “branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in older people and problems specific to aging population”. This department aims to maintain the physical and mental well-being of the elderly population, working closely with other specialties. The aimis to promote good health by treating and preventing disabilities and diseases in elderly patients. The department focuses on improving the quality of life, which is the actual concern of all elderly patients along with promotion of health in old age.
Principles of clinical and diagnostic reasoning used for young adults do not apply to older patients.
Geriatricians distinguish between diseases and the effects of normal aging, take a holistic view of disease, aim at functionality and treat the whole person rather than organs or organ systems.
We carry out all kinds of comprehensive geriatric evaluations for the aged patients.
The department focuses on improving the quality of life, which is the actual concern of all elderly patients. The geriatricians are specially trained to manage and treat various old age problems like falls, incontinence, memory problems and multiple chronic disorders.
